How To Help

Hospice Volunteers are an essential part of the Lake Superior Hospice team. Hospice volunteers help us carry out our mission in many ways, from the office to the people we serve facing serious illness.

Imagine how helpful it would be to you if someone delivered your medications right to your door; or if someone could stop and visit your loved one when you couldn’t be there. Lake Superior Hospice volunteers do all that – and so much more.

Our current volunteers can choose to work in many different capacities. Some of the services we currently provide include our ~

Core volunteers are the core of our volunteer program and go through a comprehensive training to learn the basics of the agency’s philosophy and practice of care. They learn the many ways that volunteer help is used throughout the organization and they are given the opportunity to choose how they would like to help. Some of these volunteers end up doing respite care, reading to patients, reminiscing, taking patients on short trips to sightsee or run errands, helping patients and families with basic day-to-day tasks and many other things.

Specific Therapy Volunteers provide service in their area of expertise. These volunteers work in a more limited capacity but are just as important. We have a shorter more specific training program for these volunteers because they only work within their realm of expertise. Some of these volunteers help us provide Massage/Relaxation Therapy, Art and Music Therapy, Horticulture Therapy, and Grooming Therapies.

Office Volunteers work in our office on Baraga Street in Marquette. They are here to greet family members who stop in, and are also here to help us with our day to day office tasks.

Although we are not a young company anymore we are a growing company, and as we grow many new needs arise. We are always looking for volunteers to join us in this special line of work. We are currently in need of volunteers in every area and we would also like to expand our volunteer services to include Vigil Volunteers. These volunteers will provide companionship for patients and families as they approach the final hours of life. Many people fear that they will die alone. Vigil Volunteers walk with a patient and family through the dying process, helping them know what to expect, offering comfort through reading, praying, music – whatever they wish.
