Shared Vision Award

October 9, 2009

ANN ARBOR – The Michigan Eye-Bank is pleased to announce that Lake Superior Hospice, located in Marquette, will receive the Eye-Bank’s Shared Vision Award during the Hospice’s open house event on October 9, 2009.

The Shared Vision Award recognizes individuals or organizations that have gone the extra mile in supporting the Eye-Bank and its mission to restore sight. “Lake Superior Hospice has done an outstanding job of incorporating the option of donation into their client’s plan of care,” explains Carrie Wolverton, Hospice Coordinator for the Michigan Eye-Bank. Currently, Lake Superior Hospice is the leading hospice cornea donor in Michigan. According to Wolverton, many hospice patients don’t realize they can become donors, and hospices don’t always address the issue of donation with their patients. The staff at Lake Superior Hospice, however, have taken it upon themselves to talk to their patients about donation. When patients are interested, staff make all the appropriate arrangements for them. “Offering the option of donation was not something they had to do,” explains Wolverton. “They wanted to do this.” The reason Lake Superior Hospice is such a strong supporter of donation and the Eye-Bank is because of its patients and their families, according to Cheryl Schrandt, a social worker at the hospice. “Death is something we all have to face at some point,” she says. “We want to help people through that process.” Patients, she adds, are relieved when they learn they can donate their corneas, and donation helps families through their grief.
